Safe Sanctuaries
Safe Sancturies Policy
The importance of this material is to form and to maintain an awareness of "Safe Sanctuary" for everyone who comes to Miles Memorial United Methodist Church in order for all church leaders and members to do everything possible to provide a safe and loving facility for everyone.
Why is this lesson needed?
1. Just in this zipcode for the Ocean View Area of Norfolk, Virginia, approximately 100 registered sex
offenders are living. Most of these offenders have had crimes involving children.
2. Our church is usually wide open to the public.
3. We have had issues in the past months and years with children and youth not being properly
supervised at church activities.
4. It is all too easy as you watch children and youth and vulnerable adults walk around the church to
think that a church teacher or a parent or somebody else is responsible for their supervision.
5. Any staff member of the church and any person who works with children and youth at this church is
required by church policy to have a basic class in youth protection and then a refresher class every
two years.
If you have any questions or comments about this procedure or policy, please feel free to contact Gina Allain, Chairperson of the Nurture Learning Committee.
